Many of my:
Stressed clients resist meditation.
Overweight clients resist organic food.
Inflexible clients resist stretching and yoga.
Clients who don’t sleep well resist getting into bed before 10:30pm.
Diabetic clients resist protein without carbs.
Distance cardio clients resist heavy weight training.
Clients with poor balance resist exercises that throw off their balance.
But these are the very things that they need the most.
It’s easy for a calm person to meditate. It’s easy for a person with good balance to stand on one foot. However, my clients that have poor balance need to regularly challenge their tilting and righting reflexes if they want to continue performing basic life tasks. No one wants to have to hold onto a railing when they go down stairs. If my stressed clients want any relief, they need to learn how to calm the system down. The problem is that because they’re so amped up, meditation feels like it doesn’t work. Or that it’s hard work. The truth is that, yea it IS hard work. That’s why meditation is called a “practice”. No one masters it on day one. Even the calm people. The key is to trust the process and not resist. Resistance and Complacence are the enemy.
Too often, we resist things that are outside of our comfort zone. This makes this us one dimensional and often creates dysfunction in the body. Eating the same foods, doing the same exercises, walking the same path, and repeating the same pattern will create specific adaptations and drive dysfunction further into the body. To achieve balance in the body and obtain optimal health we have to sometimes step outside the ordinary. Sometimes we need to do the very opposite of what we are typically drawn to.
Continue to learn and grow for the rest of your life. Never get set in your ways. Be proud of who you are, but be motivated to make yourself better.
